Glenn Whitman: What were the biggest challenges for the students?

Gerry Albarelli: They struggle with what is the difference between oral history, journalism, and where chronology fit into this. Chronology is a hard thing for seventh and eighth graders to get a handle on. At one point, one new student once said, “I have a question for you, why are stories so important?” I think because stories have been trivialized in general by the culture that there is a little trouble with that. Then a student from Chinatown said to me recently when we were leaving the police station—the kids interviewed five or six cops in teams of two or three—“I have figured something out about oral history, you can’t have a good interview unless you have a good interviewee.” In a sense that has been a problem, and you sometimes have to screen people as you search for dynamic and interesting people and sometimes they’re not. A lot of times I preinterview people just to give them a sense of what we are looking for though some people think they have to tell kids that forty years ago it was much better and these are the things you should do, they become very didactic.
